Life hacks are all the rage these days, and a life hack for gender bias is something most women in the workplace desperately need.
Given the rate of change in society to date, we are still 100 years away from gender equality in the workplace. Are we really willing to wait around that long?
The sure fire way to begin rapidly changing and reducing the gender bias in the workplace is to empower women with the knowledge, tools, and solutions they need to succeed.
Change will occur if women are set up to succeed. What is possible with change? Many things including personal growth, being able to take a stand for yourself, movement toward your goals, credibility in your field, being listened to, not getting taken for granted, not being overlooked, not treated as second best, and much more.
Here are my top strategies and life hack for gender bias in the workplace to begin gaining the respect, the position, and the success you want for yourself and your career.
Life Hack For Gender Bias #1: It’s all about confidence. This is the biggest life hack for gender bias in the workplace and most important because, without confidence, you don’t stand a chance.
You are only as successful as your confidence will allow.
If you don’t have confidence in yourself, confidence in your abilities, confidence in your ability to communicate, confidence in your ability to follow through; you are not going to be as successful as someone who does. Men are generally more confident than women, which is the biggest reason why this strategy is the key to it all.
Having confidence is a choice. Your past doesn’t define it for you. Your perceived limitations don’t define it for you either. And, your failures don’t determine it for you. You determine what your confidence will be for yourself. You define it.
Your confidence and the degree to what you have is on you to create and choose for yourself.
Confidence is the key to it all and now that you know this, the secret to your success, do the work and quit letting it be a limiting factor in your life from this day forward.
Life Hack For Gender Bias #2: Be present in the moment. How often do you not realize what just happened when your male colleague interrupted you yet again at the staff meeting? Did it catch you off guard?
The goal is to be present enough to recognize the situations you don’t want to happen before they do or even as they unfold. And secondly, to have the presence enough to stop other’s behavior or change it. Half the battle is simply recognizing what is going on so you can then respond. What is the body language of the person about to interrupt you saying, you can see it coming if you pay attention. Simply looking this person in the eye might prevent him from interrupting you or even incorporating a phrase such as “I’ll finish my comments before you jump in.”
When you are present in the moment you have the opportunity to choose your own response.
The situation doesn’t choose your response, you do.
Life Hack For Gender Bias #3: Create your own future. If you feel you are being held back or not getting the same opportunities as your male counterparts, then you need to take control and do something about it.
The best advice is, “You have to look out for number one because no one is going to do it for you”. You can never rely on your supervisor or training manager to do this for you. You cannot wait for others. You have to make this happen on your own.
Do you have a training plan you have created for yourself and shared with your supervisor? If not, you needed to do that yesterday!
You need to chart your course in how you are going to go from point “A” to point “B”. This needs to include building your skills, your knowledge base, your experience levels, your qualifications, your certifications, or whatever is needed for your particular job or next job you are trying to land. Ask people in your organization what they did to get to where they are. Find out the qualifications needed for promotions you are interested in. Determine how to get the knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, training, etc. you need to get you where you are going.
